Wisconsin Clean Cities

CURRENT PROJECTS

* Clean Airport Partnership -
General Mitchell International Airport (GMIA)

GMIA, located in Milwaukee, is a prime target for the development of a comprehensive strategy to integrate alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) into its daily operations. GMIA is county-run and has approximately 137 fleet vehicles within the county-owned airport fleet, either rented, leased or owned by GMIA. Furthermore, GMIA has a large contingency of airlines using tugs and belt loaders that have viable off-road AFV uses. GMIA, Wisconsin's largest airport, is located within the heart of the six-county severe ozone non-attainment area of Southeastern Wisconsin. The airport serves over 5.5 million commercial passengers annually.

Current Clean Cities projects with GMIA include:

Clean Airport Partnership Program - WCC-SEA works closely with GMIA to develop a program to integrate alternative fuels into their daily operations. GMIA uses natural gas and electric as their fuels of choice. Current alternative fuels activity at GMIA include the following:

 - GMIA currently owns and operates three compressed natural gas (CNG) shuttles (Ford cutaways) that transport employees and passengers from the parking terminals/lots throughout GMIA. These vehicles displace thousands of gallons of diesel with clean burning natural gas.
    *The 440th Air Wing has 11 CNG vehicles.
    *The 128th Air National Guard has five CNG vehicles.
    *GMIA plans to replace the rest of the diesel shuttle fleet (10) with CNG models.
    *In addition, GMIA will replace its fleet of 42 gasoline powered vehicles with CNG in the future.

* E85 Infrastructure Development

WCC-SEA is partnering with the Wisconsin Division of Energy (DOE) and Utica Energy, Inc. to expand the ethanol refueling infrastructure in eastern and central Wisconsin. With support from WCC-SEA and the Wisconsin DOE, Utica Energy was recently awarded a $150,000 grant toward a total $1,265,000 program budget. This State Energy Program (SEP) Special Projects grant through the U.S. Department of Energy runs from 10/1/05 - 12/31/06.

By expanding the Regional North Central E85 Transportation, and statewide, E85 Corridor, ethanol will be more widely available to consumers using this clean-burning, domestically-produced, economical fuel. Utica plans to displace 40,000 - 170,000 gallons of gasoline per year with this renewable fuel, depending on how many sites it establishes to accompany its founding site in Auroraville, 20 miles west of Oshkosh on Highway 21. This original site opened in May 2005 and is already one of the highest-volume sites in the nation.
