Dear Friends:
Welcome to the Wisconsin Clean Cities website! Thank you for visiting!
Alternative fuels are swiftly becoming the most economical and environmentally-conscious way to power automobiles, trucks and other vehicles. Options include natural gas, ethanol, biodiesel, fuel blends, hybrid-electric and propane. Related strategies include increasing fuel economy and reducing idling time. Alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) are a smart consumer choice. In an ideal world, they're the fuels of choice. They're clean-burning, domestically produced, environmentally friendly, low-cost transportation alternatives to oil, particularly foreign oil.
While the initial cost of a light-duty AFV is higher, the owner will usually save money over the lifetime of the vehicle. AFVs typically require less maintenance and have lower fuel costs. So why doesn't everyone or every fleet turn to AFVs? For one, the refueling infrastructure is not readily available in some areas. For commuting or day trips, most consumers would fare well with an AFV. But, for those who travel long distances, or take cross country road trips, refueling may require careful planning.
Fortunately, auto manufacturers offer both dedicated AFVs (i.e., the vehicle runs only on the alternative fuel) and non-dedicated (bi-fuel/dual fuel) AFVs, whereby its tanks accommodate both gasoline and alternative fuel. So why aren't consumers and fleets racing to buy an AFV? Many folks are unaware such vehicles exist. That's where Wisconsin Clean Cities (WCC-SEA) comes in. WCC-SEA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cleaner air and energy security through developing alternative fuels and related strategies. Our members work toward educating the general public and fleet managers about AFVs and alternative fuels. As one of the earlier Clean Cities Programs designated by the U.S. Department of Energy, we've been providing information and helping to build an AFV infrastructure in southeastern Wisconsin since 1994.
