Outpost Natural Foods

Location: Milwaukee and Wauwatosa, Wisconsin

About: Outpost Natural Foods is a consumer-owned retail cooperative that exists so that owners have a healthy, diverse and sustainable community. Serving metro Milwaukee since 1970, today we have over 20,000 active owners, four store locations, two market cafes and a wholesale division. At Outpost we believe in the Triple Bottom Line and doing our part to maintain a healthy environment for the future.

Our fleet is made up of four vehicles. These vehicles distribute prepared food items from our central kitchen in Bay View to our other store locations and two market cafés. These trucks also transfer inventory to stores as needed and deliver for catering events and wholesale accounts.

2015 Outpost owns the following four vehicles:

  • GMC Van: 2005 GMC Cargo Van with a gas engine. Used as a pickup & delivery vehicle.
  • GMC Truck: 2009 GMC 5500 Refrigerated Truck with a diesel engine. Used for food service runs six days a week.
  • F550: 2012 Ford F550 Refrigerated Truck with a diesel engine. Used for Wholesale Monday through Friday.
  • CNG refrigerated truck added in the spring of 2015

These vehicles distribute prepared food items from our central kitchen in Bay View to our three other store locations and market café. These trucks also transfer inventory to stores as needed and deliver for catering events and wholesale accounts. The following chart illustrates the amount of miles each vehicle has put on over the last three years. The F550 was new in 2012 and replaced a faulty CNG truck.

*Note: May of FY14 we added a forth store location. FY15 was our first full year with an added distribution location.

In 2014 Outpost joined Wisconsin Clean Cities “Wisconsin Smart Fleet Program” to help evaluate our fleet. The program gathers and analyzes data and offers a report of recommendations, which outlined methods and strategies to reduce fuel costs, petroleum use and greenhouse gas emissions. Outpost has worked some of these recommendations into our goals section and continues to participate in the program. Participating in the green fleet program has let Outpost take inventory of what we are doing well and what we can improve on. It has helped us set goals for future fleet needs.
